World Cup 2026: Switzerland enters the round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over Algeria
Switzerland have reached the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup after a 2-0 win over Algeria, marking the fourth consecutive time they have reached this round.
Switzerland was officially present in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup after a 2-0 victory over Algeria last Thursday. This is the team's fourth consecutive advance to the round of 16, but they are still looking to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since the tournament was held in 1954. This time around, Switzerland will face the winner of the match between Colombia and Ghana on Friday (local time 9:30 p.m., Fox).
Thursday's win was Switzerland's third in a row, something they have never done in World Cup history. Their previous two wins were against Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The match started quite evenly in Vancouver, when Algeria was still excited after passing the group stage in a dramatic way. They had the first few chances to score, but it was Switzerland who scored first. Johan Manzambi had a quick counterattack and got past Algeria's defense, creating a chance for Breel Embolo to score in the 10th minute. That was the driving force of the match.
Algeria controlled the ball more than Switzerland, but this team discovered many weaknesses in the opponent's defense. This also happened at the beginning of the second half, when Dan Ndoye scored from outside the box, increasing the score to 2-0. In a chaotic World Cup tournament, the rest of the match did not bring much pressure for Switzerland. The closest the two teams got after that was a spectacular miss by Switzerland, but that didn't stop their fans from singing throughout extra time.
