Chelsea have confirmed that they will start the new season under coach Xabi Alonso this coming Thursday. This will be the start of Alonso's tenure, although the Spanish coach is not yet at Cobham. A number of the club's new recruits, including Dastan Satpaev from Kairat and Geovany Quenda from Sporting, have already begun preparations, as have players from Chelsea's academy. A number of academy players - including Shim Mheuka and Reggie Walsh, who have appeared for the first team - could be involved in the upcoming tour of Australasia. There are three weeks of work under Alonso at the training ground, and he is also expected to be announced at a press conference at Stamford Bridge before the team flies to Sydney for the start of their tour. Players not participating in the World Cup, including player of the season Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer, are expected to report from day one after not being selected for the national team. However, the eight players participating in FIFA's North American tournament will return in phases after a short break between seasons. Chelsea's pre-season matches include matches against Western Sydney Wanderers and Tottenham in Australia, followed by matches against Juventus in Hong Kong, AC Milan in Indonesia and Johor Darul Ta'zim in Malaysia. The team will return to London to prepare for their Premier League opener against Fulham, marking the start of the Alonso era.
