Bayer Leverkusen have announced the signing of left-back Miguel Gutierrez from Napoli. Gutierrez has signed a five-year contract with Leverkusen following a €26 million transfer from Napoli, where he played for one season. Last season, the 25-year-old made 36 appearances for Napoli, helping the team keep 6 clean sheets, scoring 1 goal and providing 1 assist as Napoli finished second in Serie A and won the Supercoppa Italiana.
Among Napoli defenders in the 2025-26 season, Gutierrez has created the most second chances (26), won the fourth most duels and is sixth in duels won (97). Gutierrez is expected to be a direct replacement for Alejandro Grimaldo, who left Leverkusen to move to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer.
"The club has impressed me a lot over the past few years; Bayer 04 has an excellent reputation in Italy and also in my native Spain," Gutierrez said on the club's website. "I've heard a lot about the Bundesliga, I've watched the matches and I'm looking forward to the atmosphere in the stadiums in Germany. Above all, I always want to succeed, both domestically and internationally. Bayer Leverkusen, with their great squad, offers me the best conditions to achieve that."
Gutierrez has joined his new teammates in preparation for the season, as Leverkusen will face Sevilla, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United before the start of the regular season. Leverkusen will face Wehen in the DFB-Pokal on August 22 before starting their Bundesliga campaign against newly promoted side Elversberg a week later.
What happens next
After joining Bayer Leverkusen, Gutierrez will quickly integrate into the squad and prepare for upcoming matches, including confrontations with Sevilla and Nottingham Forest. His presence is expected to improve the team's defense and attack capabilities, and help Leverkusen improve its performance in the upcoming Bundesliga season.
