Former Hibernian and Kilmarnock manager Bobby Williamson has put himself forward for the Scotland manager's job with a dream team that includes Ally McCoist, Scott Brown and Kevin Thomson. The 64-year-old, who has coached the Kenya and Uganda national teams, admitted that "I won't get the Tartan Army excited" but believes his team can do it.

McCoist was in charge of Rangers and had previously supported Walter Smith in Scotland, Brown won multiple trophies as Celtic captain, while Thomson helped Rangers reach the UEFA Cup final. "I've tried to get in touch with [Scottish Football Association chief executive] Ian Maxwell and the chairman, but that hasn't happened yet and I've got someone else to do it to see if it's worth pursuing," Williamson told BBC Radio Scotland.

"I know I won't get the Tartan Army excited, that's for sure, but maybe for future international managers who get the opportunity, it might get them excited for what they've achieved with Scotland and their clubs."

Former Rangers, West Bromwich Albion, Rotherham United and Kilmarnock striker Williamson has been away from coaching for the past 10 years. However, when he read reports from home in Nairobi about Steve Clarke's resignation as national coach, his mind began to work. "I've been out for a while, but I've been looking at the reports in the paper about who the leading candidates are for this position and I think my profile is very suitable," he said.

"I've coached two national teams in Africa. In Uganda we had 60,000 at home games - very passionate fans - and I handled that pressure. I knew the passion of the Scottish fans was huge and they didn't want to be let down, and I thought 'can I give it a try?'."

Williamson was McCoist's teammate at Rangers, while Brown and Thomson were young midfielders when he was in charge of Hibs. "The first text I sent was to Alistair McCoist and I said I was thinking about it and he said 'I'm in'."

"So I started thinking 'who else?' And I think it's in the long-term interest for Scotland - to bring in some younger managers so they have international experience. Both of these guys - Scott Brown and Kevin Thomson - have played so many games for Scotland, they've played at the highest level. They certainly have that knowledge, but they haven't really experienced the coaching side of things at that level and I think, if I can help them, that will give Scotland some options going forward and maybe some continuity."

As a manager, Williamson led Kilmarnock to the Scottish Cup title in 1997, led Plymouth Argyle to the Championship, won the CECAFA Cup in 2011 with Uganda and led Gor Mahia to win the Kenyan league championship. However, Williamson admitted that "it was a big if" when he nominated himself to be Scotland manager. "They probably already have a plan and have already identified the candidates," he added.
