Canada Recorded Historic Victory In World Cup Knockout Round
Canada won their first knockout round at the World Cup thanks to a late goal from Stephen Eustaquio, thereby advancing to the next round and receiving praise from coach Jesse Marsch.

On Sunday afternoon, Canada created history with a 1-0 win over South Africa in their first round of 32 match of the World Cup. The decisive goal was scored by Stephen Eustaquio in the second minute of second half stoppage time, giving Canada their first win in a World Cup knockout match. The match took place at SoFi Stadium, with Canada aiming to go far in the tournament.
The tense match looked like it would go into extra time until Eustaquio — who plays for Los Angeles FC — curled a stunning volley from outside the box into the bottom corner of Ronwen Williams' goal. Canada, as co-hosts, held on to their advantage in the final minutes of the match.
Coach Jesse Marsch gathered the players after the final whistle and gave an emotional speech: "You are Canadian heroes! You are heroes for the future generations of this country. Football has a bright future thanks to you. You should be proud of yourselves and of this match."
Previously, Canada played their first three matches at home in Toronto and Vancouver, but they suffered a 1-2 defeat to Switzerland, making them the first home team to play away at the World Cup. However, they still received enthusiastic support from local audiences and traveling fans.

Eustaquio shared: "We never stopped believing. And I think this goal is really what we deserved." South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made five excellent saves, but coach Hugo Broos' team was unable to keep a clean sheet under pressure from Canada.
Even though South Africa had good chances, they still lost the match due to lack of strength and speed compared to their opponents. Coach Broos said: "We had a difficult match. But looking back, we can be proud of what we did."
Canada had the better chances throughout the match, but South Africa remained resilient and created a few excellent chances. Canada finally scored when Alistair Johnston played a long pass into the box and Eustaquio handled it perfectly to score.
Team Canada will advance to the next round, where they will face either the Netherlands or Morocco on Saturday, July 4.
