Cape Verde shocked Uruguay, drawing 2-2
Cape Verde excellently drew 2-2 with Uruguay in the second match at the 2026 World Cup, after previously having a 0-0 draw with Spain.
Cape Verde had an impressive debut at the 2026 World Cup when they faced Uruguay, a team that won the tournament four times. The match took place at dawn on Monday, Cape Verde surprised everyone by scoring the opening goal in the 21st minute thanks to Kevin Pina's long-range shot, leaving goalkeeper Fernando Muslera unable to react, giving Cape Verde a 1-0 lead.
However, Uruguay did not allow prolonged pressure. At the end of the first half, Maxi Araujo and Agustín Canobbio scored two consecutive goals, helping Uruguay come back from a 2-1 lead.
But Cape Verde did not give up. After the break, they calmed down and found a 2-2 equalizer in the 60th minute thanks to Muslera's error in a defensive situation. Hélio Varela, the substitute, quickly took advantage of the opportunity and put the ball into the empty net.
In the final minutes, Uruguay increased the pressure to find the decisive goal, but Cape Verde defended stubbornly and kept the score 2-2. This result helps Cape Verde still have a chance to pass the group stage at this year's World Cup.
