Player Cucurella made a big transfer to Real Madrid on the day of the World Cup

Marc Cucurella has returned to Spain after five years playing abroad. The Chelsea defender has just completed a transfer to Real Madrid for a reported fee of 60 million euros and signed a contract until mid-2032. Currently, Cucurella (27 years old) is participating in the World Cup with the Spanish team and will play his first match at the tournament on Monday night.

Before coming to Real Madrid, Cucurella had a contract with Chelsea until 2029. He joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 for a fee of about 65 million euros. At Chelsea, Cucurella had to compete for positions with Dutch international Jorrel Hato.

Cucurella's transfer to Real Madrid is seen as an interesting move. This defender was born in Catalonia and spent a long time in the youth academies of Espanyol and Barcelona. He made one appearance for Barcelona's first team before shining at Getafe and asserting his position in Spanish professional football.

This is the first signing that Real Madrid has made since Florentino Pérez was re-elected as club president and José Mourinho returned to lead the team. Previously, it was reported that Real Madrid would announce other signings such as Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konaté, who are also on their way to joining the team.

Cucurella's transfer ahead of Spain's first World Cup match created some controversy in his homeland. Last May, no Real Madrid player was called up to the Spain team to participate in the World Cup. More interestingly, this is the second year in a row that Real Madrid has recruited a left-back at a high price. Álvaro Carreras joined from Benfica last year for 50 million euros and made 40 appearances last season.
