England's path to the 2026 World Cup final after taking the lead

England has officially passed the 2026 World Cup group stage by winning first place in Group L. If England get through this stage, they could face defending champions Argentina, who have won all three of their group matches and feature the brilliance of Lionel Messi, who scored five goals in the month he turned 39 years old. Argentina's first knockout match is against Cape Verde, before facing the winners of Australia and Egypt in the round of 16.

Other opponents who could face England in the semi-finals include Colombia, if both teams win their first two knockout matches. To reach the semi-finals, England need to return to Atlanta, where they will play their round of 32 match. All 16 teams on the other side of the group are also potential opponents in the World Cup final. Strong teams that England cannot face before the final include France, the 2018 champions, Germany, the 2022 runners-up, and Spain, the 2010 champions. France and Germany will face off in the round of 16 if they both get past their first knockout match, while the Netherlands will struggle against Morocco. Any of those teams could face France or Germany in the quarter-finals, with the winner likely to face Spain in the semi-finals. The final will take place in New Jersey in front of 82,500 spectators.
