Crysencio Summerville thanks Koeman and looks back on World Cup debut: 'I'm grateful for this opportunity'
Crysencio Summerville expressed his gratitude to Ronald Koeman and shared his feelings after the Dutch team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup.

Crysencio Summerville took to Instagram to reflect on his World Cup debut and his unfortunate exit against Morocco. The 24-year-old player from Rotterdam feels grateful to coach Ronald Koeman, who recently resigned, for giving him the opportunity to play in the biggest tournament on the planet. However, he also expressed regret that the Dutch team could not create history.
The Dutch team had an unsatisfactory World Cup, only stopping at the round of 16, a far cry from their achievement of reaching the quarterfinals in 2022. The match against Morocco ended in defeat after a penalty shootout, in which Summerville, Justin Kluivert and Quinten Timber were all unable to successfully execute their penalty kicks. However, Summerville was still one of the team's bright spots throughout the tournament in the US, Mexico and Canada.

During preparations for the World Cup, he made his national team debut against Algeria. At the tournament, Summerville appeared twice and scored against Japan and Sweden, while also providing an assist. He expressed: 'I am very grateful to have the opportunity to debut at the World Cup. We came here with a dream: to write history for our country. But unfortunately, that didn't happen. It's heartbreaking and not easy to accept.'
After the loss to Morocco, Koeman decided to resign as head coach. Summerville also thanked Koeman and hoped he would have good things in the future. He also did not forget to thank his teammates and everyone who supported the team throughout the journey.
After missing the penalty, Summerville was bombarded with racist comments on social media, forcing him to turn off the comments section on Instagram. The Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) has announced that it will sue individuals who commit racist acts online against the team's players. 'There is no place for racism. Not in football, not in society, never. We need to be an example for the next generation. We must be more united than ever. We will be back', he concluded.
