Crystal Palace is close to completing a contract with Pierre Sage
Crystal Palace are close to completing a deal to appoint Lens manager Pierre Sage as new head coach following Oliver Glasner's departure from the club.
Crystal Palace are close to finalizing a deal to appoint Lens manager Pierre Sage as their new head coach. According to information from BBC Sport, Palace has had working sessions with the 47-year-old French strategist as they search for a replacement for Oliver Glasner, who left the club at the end of last season. Currently, Crystal Palace is completing the final stages of a financial package to promote Sage's departure from the French club to take over the position at Selhurst Park.
Pierre Sage joined Lens 12 months ago and led the team to a second-place finish in Ligue 1, while also bringing home the first Coupe de France trophy in the club's 120-year history. Previously, Palace considered appointing former Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola, but he signed a two-year contract with Liverpool earlier this month.
In addition, Palace has also discussed with Coventry coach Frank Lampard, Kieran McKenna, former coach of Ipswich and Sean Dyche, former coach of Burnley, Nottingham Forest and Everton as alternative options. However, Sage's style of play is likely to attract support from the fans, and his English ability is also said to be good, which will not hinder him when he arrives at Selhurst Park.
Palace's victory in the UEFA Conference League means they will participate in the Europa League next season, but they will face a challenging summer. The future of French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta remains unclear as he enters the final year of his contract, while England midfielder Adam Wharton is also being linked with a number of other Premier League clubs. Palace also offered midfielder Daichi Kamada a new contract when the Japan international's contract expired at the end of last season.
