Del Morgan, a former player and now goalkeeper coach at Liverpool Women, has become the first woman in Wales to hold both the UEFA Goalkeeping A License and the UEFA A Licence. For Morgan, achieving these two certifications is a long-term commitment.

"It's been a goal of mine since I started coaching over 10 years ago," Morgan said. "I'm primarily a goalkeeper coach, so I've been focusing on the goalkeeper coaching route, but through the UEFA qualifications you have to have both outfield and goalkeeper qualifications to progress to the next level."

Morgan, who also played for Everton, emphasized that the process put her through a huge challenge. "I always wanted something to challenge myself, to keep me on my toes. It really took me out of my comfort zone like never before, so I'm glad I decided to do it," she said.

Morgan, originally from Prestatyn, was part of the Wrexham squad that won promotion to the Adran Premier in 2023. With the club already in the top flight of Welsh women's football, Morgan has decided to leave at the end of the 2024-25 season to focus on her coaching career.

Pursuing these certifications also has significant costs, she said. “The problem with certifications is that they cost money, like any certification in any type of job,” Morgan shares. "Along the way I may have had support from the clubs, but the higher you go the more it costs. That's probably why a lot of people stop at a certain level because they can't find the next financial source to go on. The FAW have been very supportive, especially this year with the outfield player qualifications, there's been a lot of help in there. They've also made it possible for me to coach in their youth development pathway, so that's like a compensation for me."

Morgan has also worked with Cefn Druids and Connah's Quay Nomads academies, and is grateful for the support from FAW. She credits Nicola Anderson, who was FAW's Head of Women's Coach Education, as having had the "biggest impact" on her coaching journey.

Now, Morgan hopes to inspire other women in their coaching journeys. "I hope they will see my journey to help motivate them," she shares. "We need more female coaches, especially female goalkeeping coaches."

Morgan is a Wrexham fan who has seen the men's team rise from the National League to the Championship under the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Investment from the owners since their arrival in 2021 has transformed the club from strength to strength, including the growth of the women's team, which she has also been a part of.

“When Rob and Ryan arrived, the Wrexham story exploded,” says Morgan. "Me, my dad and my brother talk about it all the time, but we went to Wrexham games when they were in the Conference. We were just three of 1,500 fans who went to see them play Dover, and now it's hard to get a ticket to a home game."

The progress the club has made over the past five years has been “amazing” according to Morgan. "To see that as a fan and then just have a small part of my four years of playing football, it's really exciting," she said.

Morgan also mentioned that she has no intention of becoming a head coach but still wants to focus on the goalkeeping coach position. "I would love to one day become a first-team goalkeeping coach in the WSL. Would I be ready for that right now? No, and I'm very open to it," she said.
