- Aston Villa captain John McGinn apologizes to fans but provides hope despite Brighton horror show.
Aston Villa captain John McGinn apologized to fans after the heavy 4-0 defeat to Brighton, but he still refused to press the panic button in the situation. Jack Hinshelwood scored twice in the first two minutes of the first half, while Brighton took full advantage of the opportunity to score four goals in the first 45 minutes. Additionally, midfielder Joao Gomes was sent off just before half-time, adding to Villa's suffering.
With Brighton already four goals ahead and Aston Villa with a player remaining, much of the second half was played at a leisurely pace. However, McGinn praised his team's fighting spirit for not conceding another goal in the second half, and expressed hope after similar poor starts in the past. "We started the game very well," McGinn said. "We had a chance to take the lead with Emi Buendia. We were the ones creating the chances. But, playing at the top level, when you make mistakes, that can happen.
"The goals we conceded are unacceptable, nothing can justify it. We apologize to our fans because when we have to play away from home in the Premier League, traveling is not easy and costs a lot of money and time. They didn't want to come here to see their team lose four goals before half-time.
"But on the contrary, when we were losing 4-0 at the Amex with 10 men, we needed to stand up in the second half. That team of players in there had the opportunity to be proud and fight, and we did that. We obviously felt angry and disappointed with the result. We set the bar high and this was far from being achieved. However, there is a part of me that is proud of the way we reacted. Today could easily have spiraled out of control. and got messy. I have a lot of pride in the performance in the second half.
"After five matches last season, we only had one point. Hopefully this season will be the same."
What happens next
Aston Villa will need to quickly adjust their tactics and mentality to improve in upcoming matches. McGinn has emphasized that the team needs to learn lessons from this defeat and not let poor starts affect the season.
