The Six Kings Slam tournament, taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, had to be postponed to December after a series of attacks that left many people dead. Organizers have announced that the tournament, originally scheduled to take place from October 21 to 23, will be held again from December 27 to 30. This change comes as security in the Saudi Arabian capital becomes more unstable than ever.
This year's tournament attracts attention with the participation of big names in tennis such as Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz and Learner Tien. However, the security situation forced the organizers to reconsider to ensure the safety of participants and spectators.
Attacks carried out by Houthi forces in Yemen have raised concerns about the ability to host this major sporting event. The rocket launch at Riyadh airport on October 10 killed 13 people and injured more than 300, raising concerns about the security situation in the region.
However, in the press release, the organizers did not directly mention the attacks but only stated that the decision to postpone the tournament was to ensure the quality of the audience experience as well as Riyadh Season's commitment to organizing sporting events of the highest standards. This is the third time the Six Kings Slam event has been held, and this tournament is famous for its large payouts for participating players. Last year, Jannik Sinner won the championship and received a bonus of up to 6 million USD after defeating Alcaraz in the final.
Not only tennis but other sports are also affected by the security situation in Saudi Arabia. On October 13, the Saudi Pro League had to postpone three matches citing "logistical considerations". Two matches between Al Riyadh and Al Hilal, along with Al Ittihad and Al Shabab, have been moved to December, while Al Nassr's away trip to Al Ahli will take place in March next year. Even Al Nassr's match in the AFC Champions League was postponed for an hour due to a missile warning.
The Asian Tour golf tournament is also closely monitoring the security situation, as the PIF Saudi International tournament is scheduled to take place at Riyadh Golf Club from November 18 to 21. Sports organizations are working together to consider the possibility of holding the event as planned amid escalating tensions in the region. Conflict developments may also affect upcoming Formula 1 races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
What happens next
The tournament will be held again at the end of December, but the organizers need to ensure security and quality of experience for the audience. If the security situation does not improve, the ability to organize major sporting events in Saudi Arabia may be affected, which will impact the season of Saudi Pro League clubs.
