Grimaldo expressed interest in Atletico Madrid
Alejandro Grimaldo has shown interest in joining Atletico Madrid, hinting at the possibility of a transfer from Bayer Leverkusen after a successful season.
Alejandro Grimaldo has publicly expressed that Atletico Madrid "is a club that I like" as he moves closer to a move to the La Liga side. The 30-year-old defender, whose current contract with Bayer Leverkusen expires in June 2027, is said to be close to joining Atleti after three years playing in Germany. Grimaldo played a key role in the Werkself's Bundesliga title-winning campaign in the 2023-24 season, scoring 10 goals and providing 13 assists in 33 matches. Since joining Leverkusen in 2023, Grimaldo has scored the most goals of any defender in Europe's top five leagues (30 goals), provided the most assists (41) and created the most chances (326). Leverkusen's new coach, Carles Martinez, had previously expressed his desire to keep Grimaldo at the club, but the defender seems determined to move to the Spanish capital. In an interview on Ibai Llanos' Twitch channel, Grimaldo said: "We'll see what happens in the coming days. Obviously there are talks, but nothing official yet. Atleti is a club that I like, I've always said that." Atleti ended the La Liga season in fourth place, but 25 points behind champions Barcelona after the final round. Diego Simeone's side also progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League, where they lost to Arsenal 2-1 on aggregate.
