Grimaldo is close to completing his transfer to Atletico Madrid

Alejandro Grimaldo's transfer from Bayer 04 Leverkusen to Atletico Madrid is in its final stages. The two clubs have reached an agreement on the transfer fee for the Spanish World Cup participant. Finally, Bayer 04 will receive 25 million euros in transfer money.
Everything is happening very quickly: In negotiations about Grimaldo, Bayer 04 and Atletico Madrid have almost reached a consensus. The left-back will turn 31 this September and his departure from Leverkusen is approaching. Atletico Madrid have informed Bayer 04 of their interest in the Spanish national player, and negotiations over the transfer fee are progressing well.
The initial transfer fee that Bayer requested was 30 million euros to allow for some negotiating space. However, the two sides have now agreed on a total of 25 million euros, including bonuses that will eventually be paid out in full.
The loss of Grimaldo will be a big loss for Bayer 04, as he is the team's best player, taking on the role of both left-back and conductor of the team. Last season, Grimaldo scored a total of 27 scoring points (14 goals and 13 assists) and was one of the best corner kick and free kick scorers.
To replace an exemplary player and leader like Grimaldo, Bayer 04 will need to find a quality name. Currently, after selling Grimaldo to Atletico Madrid, only Jeanuel Belocian remains as a left-back in the Bundesliga club's squad. The 21-year-old defender was on loan to VfL Wolfsburg in the first half of 2026 and is recovering from serious injuries, so is still a work in progress.
