Coach Russell Martin needs to prove his adaptability at Leicester City
Coach Russell Martin's adaptation at Leicester City is being questioned after previous failures, with the responsibility of restoring the club's fortunes in League One.
Leicester City's new coach, Russell Martin, is under great pressure to prove his ability to adapt. Can his possession-based style of play work effectively in League One? Martin must learn from his previous mistakes at Rangers, where he had a failed spell that lasted just 123 days. Before joining Ibrox, Martin was also criticized for his possession-oriented style at Southampton, leading to his dismissal despite bringing the team to the Premier League in 2024.
Leicester fans have protested against Martin when he was linked with the club in the past, and the division within the fanbase is something former Leicester player Matt Heath says cannot be ignored. "This may not be the most popular appointment," Heath told BBC Radio Leicester. "His recent history is not good, he has had a few bad runs but has had a spell in League One with MK Dons and he has potential."
Martin needs to create positive results from the beginning of next season if he wants to win the trust of fans. His style of play will also be important, with Heath insisting that Martin needs to demonstrate he is learning by not sticking to a single method of play. “If you don't, then you're not adapting,” Heath added. "I hope you have plans A, B and C."
The style Martin is pursuing will be quite familiar to Leicester, with his approach mirroring the style of play the team implemented under Enzo Maresca when winning the 2024 Championship. However, many fans are unhappy with the slow play under Maresca, who has had to defend his methods multiple times in a single successful season.
One difference with Martin is that his tactics can attack stronger and sharper. Heath said: "Many fans don't like the slow style of play under Enzo. As a fan, I prefer the team to have possession of the ball. If we do it right, I believe it can be entertaining."
Leicester are in the process of restructuring in the summer, having parted ways with 10 players, including captain Ricardo Pereira and strikers Patson Daka and Jordan Ayew. A reduction in the wage bill at the club amid the need to comply with financial regulations could lead to many prominent players, including winger Abdul Fatawu and stars such as Harry Winks and Jannik Vestergaard, being transferred.
Heath emphasized that it is important to have a manager in place before the season starts, so that players can be found to suit Martin's style. "We need players that fit the model he wants, and what's important are players he really likes. We've got the foundation and hopefully the club will work hard to get the players Russell wants."
