In the first match of the Premier League season, Hull City created a big shock by defeating Manchester United 2-0. This victory not only brought joy to the fans but also clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of the strategy that coach Sergej Jakirovic applied. After the match, assistant coach Dean Holden shared with the Match of the Day program about the team's plans before the match and how they prepared to deal with Manchester United.
Hull City has returned to the Premier League after 9 years of absence, and this match is an opportunity for them to assert themselves. Coach Jakirovic chose to use a defensive strategy by arranging a five-man defense, which helped his team control space well and limit Manchester United's attack power. Hull's two goals were scored by defenders Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy in the first half, giving them an early advantage in the match.
Coach Jakirovic watched a number of Manchester United's friendly matches before making this tactical decision, including a 4-2 loss to AC Milan. Holden said: "Serg have been preparing to play with a five-man defense for the past few weeks and did not want to reveal this in the build-up. We used some video footage from the Milan game to prepare for this game."
Although Hull only controlled 28% of the ball, Holden insisted the team were not worried about not having the ball. "We feel comfortable without the ball, which is one of our strengths. Counter-attacking quickly is also an important part of our tactics," he added.
Hull City, a team that is expected to have difficulty this season, could not have had a better start. They entered the play-offs in dramatic fashion and won to return to the Premier League. Defeating Manchester United, the team that finished third last season, further increased the confidence of this team. Coach Holden emphasized: "Our goal is to maintain our position in the tournament. A victory in the opening match is a dream for us."
Hull City's success in this match is not just an ordinary victory but also a big step forward in their career in the Premier League. The team will need to continue to maintain this form to achieve their goal of relegation in the upcoming season.
What happens next
With this victory, Hull City will have more confidence in the next matches of the Premier League season. They will need to maintain their form and effective tactics to continue attracting attention from fans and experts. The next match will be an opportunity for them to confirm their position in the tournament and continue to improve their season.
