Marcello Lippi, former coach and head coach of the Italian team, shared his memories of the 2006 World Cup final, emphasizing that the way the players looked at him showed they had confidence. "You understand whether you're going to win or lose from the players' eyes: if they're staring, it means they want to take the kick. If they're looking away, it's a concern because they're trying to hide.
At Roma, during the penalty kick in the Champions League in 1996, everyone looked at me. At Manchester in 2003, no one was looking, except Trezeguet who said "I'll take the first kick", and he missed. And in Berlin, once again, everyone looked at me: everything was done.
Lippi also said that after the first match, everyone was confident that they would bring home the trophy. "We feel very good, both physically and mentally. Our defense did not give the opponent any chances," Lippi said. That's why he decided to put four strikers on the field in the final minutes of the match against Germany (Totti, Iaquinta, Del Piero and Gilardino). According to Lippi, it was the most beautiful match: eliminating hosts Germany in extra time right on their home field was a great source of pride.
