Morocco honored: The first African team to reach the quarterfinals of two consecutive World Cups
Morocco became the first African team to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for two consecutive editions after a 3-0 win over Canada.
Morocco has made history at the World Cup and for all of Africa. With a 3-0 victory over Canada, the "Atlas Lions" have once again reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup. This is a unique achievement, as Opta points out: "Marocco have reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup twice in a row, becoming the first African team to do so. They are pioneers."
The first African national team to reach this round was Cameroon, in 1990 in Italy. The "Unyielding Lions" team, under the leadership of Roger Milla, surprised everyone by defeating Argentina, the defending champion, in their opening match and finishing Group B in first place. In the round of 16, they overcame Colombia in extra time, but their journey stopped in the quarterfinals at the welcome of England. The next time it took place in the US, Cameroon could not repeat this achievement and was eliminated from the group stage.

To see an African team reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup, we have to wait until 2002, when Senegal did it. Like Cameroon 12 years ago, they also defeated previous world champions France in their opening match. After finishing second in Group A behind Denmark, Senegal beat Sweden in the round of 16, but were eliminated by one of the tournament's other surprises, Türkiye.
In 2006, no African team qualified for the World Cup. The last African team to reach the quarter-finals before Morocco's success was Ghana in 2010. The "Black Stars" almost reached the semi-finals: in the quarter-finals against Uruguay, they were awarded a penalty in the 120th minute but missed, and then lost in the shootout.
