Argentina headed towards the knockout round of the 2026 World Cup after claiming their second win over Austria on Monday night. The decisive goal scored by Lionel Messi, the team's superstar player, brought his total number of goals at World Cups to 18.
In this match, Messi had a chance to score from the penalty spot but unfortunately missed and the ball went over the crossbar. However, not long after, he scored the opening goal in the 38th minute, after receiving a pass from Facundo Medina and a beautiful rebound from Thiago Almada.
Argentina controlled the match with many dangerous situations, but the Austrian team, with the presence of player Paul Wanner, could not create many clear attack opportunities. Messi's second goal came in the final minutes, when he scored in many situations to seal the victory.
Currently, Argentina has won the right to enter the knockout round and will continue to play next Saturday night against Jordan. The Austrian team will need to win their next match against Algeria to have a chance of progressing, depending on the result between Algeria and Jordan at 5am.
