Olympique Marseille was given an extension to fix its financial problems
Olympique Marseille has been given a one-season extension to overcome financial losses, instead of being banned from European competitions. At the same time, the club was also fined 10 million euros.
Olympique Marseille, featuring Jeffrey de Lange and Quinten Timber, have been given an extra season by UEFA to rectify their financial situation rather than face a ban from European competitions. UEFA's club financial control body (CFCB) has determined that Marseille could be excluded from European competitions due to not meeting financial requirements. However, the club has reached an agreement with UEFA to improve their financial situation, although it is still unable to fulfill the set conditions.
Instead of being eliminated, Marseille will have until the end of the 2026/27 season to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. However, they are also subject to other penalties, including fines of up to 10 million euros. This sum includes a 6 million euro fine for violating regulations and restrictions on player registration for the upcoming Europa League season. In addition, Marseille was also fined 4 million euros for exceeding salary standards.
In the 2025 season, this club has spent more than 70% of its total profit on transfer costs. Marseille finished last season in fifth place in Ligue 1, thus qualifying them for the main round of the Europa League. In this tournament, they will likely meet AZ, while FC Twente is fighting for a place in the main round. There is also a possibility that NEC will participate in the Europa League if they are not successful in the Champions League qualifying round.
