In the match on Friday night, Ousmane Dembélé scored the second fastest hat trick in World Cup history when he scored three goals in just 32 minutes, helping the French team win 4-1 against Norway. Dembélé opened the scoring right from the beginning of the match with a sharp right foot shot. Just 14 minutes later, he had his second goal and in the 32nd minute, Dembélé completed his hat trick. Only Erich Probst is the only player to score a hat trick faster than Dembélé, when he did so 72 years ago for Austria, with three goals in 24 minutes.
France led 3-1 at the end of the first half, thanks to a goal from Norway's Thelo Aasgaard, but the "Les Bleus" team had another goal in extra time thanks to Desire Doue, sealing a 4-1 victory. Dembélé, currently the winner of the Golden Ball award for best player, is trailing Lionel Messi and tied on points with teammate Kylian Mbappé in the race for the 2026 World Cup top scorer title. Messi, who will play his third match in the tournament on Saturday night, has scored five goals in four matches. Dembélé, Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior of Brazil and Erling Haaland of Norway each have four goals.
Haaland did not play from the start in this match because Norway made 10 player changes. Although Norway and France are competing for the top spot in Group I, both teams entered the knock-out round as the top two teams in the group. This has given Norway comfort in preparing for their next matches, which, if they finish second in the group, will face Ivory Coast, while the top team will face a team ranked third in the round of 32.
