Per Mertesacker, famous former player and familiar face of ZDF TV channel, has just been appointed to the position of sports director of the German Football Federation (DFB) starting next January. With the replacement of Andreas Rettig, Mertesacker has stepped into a role full of challenges and responsibilities, especially in the context of German football facing many problems that need to be resolved.
During his six years at ZDF, Mertesacker built his image as a professional, calm and always sincere person. His career at ZDF ended with a memorable gift: an ice bucket, symbolizing one of the most memorable moments of his playing career. Mertesacker was once angered by journalist Boris Büchler's interview but now he is back in a different role, where he will not only be responsible for the men's team but also the women's team and youth teams in the German football system.
Mertesacker, 42 years old, has had an impressive playing career, most notably winning the 2014 World Cup. After experiencing great pressure in his football career, he clearly understands the difficulties that young players are facing. This will help him have a suitable approach in developing young talent in German football. Matthias Sammer, former sporting director of the DFB, has emphasized that Mertesacker needs to be bold and decisive in implementing his ideas and plans.
Although Mertesacker is physically imposing with height and strength, that is no substitute for the managerial skills needed to turn around the fortunes of German football. England will face challenges such as attracting young talent with dual nationality, an issue the DFB has faced in recent years. Many young talents in German football come from immigrant families and have the right to choose between the German team and their ancestral country. This will be one of the important tasks that Mertesacker needs to focus on solving in the near future.
With a long career in football, Mertesacker has learned a lot from coach Arsène Wenger at Arsenal, where he served as academy manager. The transition from a former player to a manager is not an easy one, but with his vision and patience, Mertesacker hopes to create positive changes for German football in the future.
What happens next
In his new role, Mertesacker will face many challenges, including improving the performance of the men's and women's teams, as well as the youth teams. He is expected to apply experiences from his career as a player and his time working at ZDF to come up with effective development strategies for German football.
