Real Madrid is facing difficulties when Tottenham is close to reaching an agreement with the midfielder target
Real Madrid are facing a hurdle as Tottenham Hotspur move closer to signing midfielder Mateus Fernandes, a target for the Spanish club under new coach Jose Mourinho.
Real Madrid are actively searching for at least one new midfielder this summer, with coach Jose Mourinho making this one of his top priorities before the new season begins. Many names have been mentioned as potential targets for Los Blancos, including West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder is said to be one of Mourinho's favourites, thanks to his age, profile and versatility.
However, in an unfortunate development for Real Madrid, journalist Matteo Moretto reports that Tottenham Hotspur have taken a big step forward in the race to sign Fernandes. According to reports, Spurs are very close to reaching an agreement on contract terms with the Portuguese national team player. There are currently no official negotiations between Roberto De Zerbi's team and West Ham United, but Fernandes remains very open to the idea of playing for Tottenham.
In addition to Spurs, Manchester United have also expressed a strong interest in signing Fernandes and have had discussions with the player and his club. However, it seems that the North London team, after escaping the threat of relegation, is making constant efforts to improve the squad ahead of next season.
Fernandes had an impressive season at West Ham in the 2025/26 season, despite the team being relegated from the Premier League. As a young, dynamic, 21-year-old midfielder and Portugal international, he has the potential to be an excellent long-term signing not just for Real Madrid but for any club he chooses to sign for. However, Tottenham appear to have jumped ahead of both Los Blancos and Manchester United in the race for his signature. Although the deal may not be completely signed yet, Real Madrid need to prepare backup options, with Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez one of the options. Meanwhile, Manchester City's Rodri also continues to be linked and only time will tell who Mourinho & co will sign.
