Real Madrid refused to recruit defender Nico Schlotterbeck
Real Madrid have officially ruled out signing Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck due to an ankle injury that would keep him out of action for two months.
Real Madrid is looking for a new midfielder and has made an important move by removing Nico Schlotterbeck from the list of targets. According to a report from The Athletic, sources at the club say they no longer view Schlotterbeck as a viable option, although the Borussia Dortmund defender has been highly rated for a long time.
The German had been one of the favorites to strengthen Real Madrid's defence, after a season in which their defense was plagued by instability and injuries. However, the situation has changed significantly in recent weeks.
According to Real Madrid's latest transfer news, although coach Jose Mourinho still wants to add a new defender to his squad, Schlotterbeck is no longer in the running. The ankle injury he suffered during the World Cup kept Schlotterbeck out of action for about two months. This means he will not only miss the rest of the tournament but will also likely not participate in the early weeks of the new La Liga season.

Previously, it was reported that Real Madrid is still monitoring this player despite injury concerns, because they believe that Schlotterbeck's ability is still one of the best options on the market. However, according to Mario Cortegana, Nico Schlotterbeck has officially been removed from Real Madrid's list of candidates, which significantly reduces the chances of this deal happening this summer.
Fitness issues appear to have played a key role in the decision, especially as Madrid are looking for players capable of making an immediate impact. Coach Mourinho requested a new centre-back before the transfer window closed. His plans for Real Madrid include signing a new defender, with the club aware of the need to strengthen their squad after a season severely disrupted by injuries.
In the context that Schlotterbeck is no longer the leading candidate, attention has turned to other names, including Tomas Araujo, who is said to fit the criteria that Madrid is looking for, although there is currently no move on this front.
