Erik ten Hag, former Manchester United coach, has made critical comments about Cristiano Ronaldo's role in the Portuguese national team. He said that Ronaldo currently does not put the team's interests first but only focuses on his personal brand. In an in-depth interview with VI magazine, Ten Hag clearly explained his opinion on this player.
According to Ten Hag, Ronaldo is acting as if he is bigger than the team and country he represents. "It's not just a team problem. Cristiano Ronaldo seems to be keeping his country at a standstill. Portugal has a great squad, but without him they can perform better," Ten Hag emphasized.
The former Manchester United coach said that although older players can still contribute to the national team, there will be certain limits. "At national team level, older players can still have a role, but at club level, especially in the Champions League, this is no longer the case. At a certain age, like 35 or 36, that time will come," he added. Ten Hag also asserted that "nature takes its toll on everyone, including Cristiano Ronaldo."
Ten Hag worked with Ronaldo at Manchester United and once left him on the bench. He has no intention of underestimating this player's illustrious career, but it is clear that he believes that Ronaldo is no longer capable of leading the Portuguese team to great success. "I don't want to say whether I'm right or wrong, but it's clear that he's no longer winning notable titles with the team," Ten Hag shared.
Ten Hag's comments not only show his perspective on Ronaldo but also open a broader discussion about the role of older players in modern football. Should players like Ronaldo continue to represent the national team when they are no longer at their best? This question is still being asked and will continue to be a hot topic in the football world.
