I designed the jerseys for the World Cup champions

Rob Warner, a designer from Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, has had a glittering career designing kits for World Cup winning football teams. He designed the royal blue kit that Italy wore when they won the 2006 World Cup. During his time with Puma and Umbro, he oversaw the design of Cameroon's one-piece kit used in 2004, the design of England's final Umbro kit, and also Usain Bolt's kit for the record-breaking runs in Beijing in 2008.

He said the most memorable moment of his career was when designing the kit for Italy, not only because of the victory but also because "how many people can say that their product was beaten by Zidane". Warner and his team wanted to "create an identity that represents Italy". The kit is deep royal blue with navy blue patches and yellow player numbers. "The Italian people see their football team as superheroes," he said.

His design career began by "drawing on Tippex-marked pictures of Roy of the Rovers" - a character in legendary football comics. He organized a charity fashion show for Barnardo's during his studies and later worked with a fashion designer in the Birmingham Jewelery District. After graduating in fashion design from Manchester Metropolitan University, he worked for Puma in Germany for six years, where he designed all of Puma's kits for the 2006 World Cup, as well as the Italian championship team and the Ferrari Formula 1 team's kit. "It was a bit of fun," he says.

In his role as Umbro's creative director, he designed the final Umbro England team kit "which, at the time, was quite controversial with its white and red colors". He founded a design academy that sells courses to people who want to become designers, with more than 600 subscribers from more than 50 countries. But what is his favorite World Cup outfit? "I think the 1990 West German outfit is most people's favourite," he said. "[It's] just a little bit more refined - it's a little bit more subtle and really reflects a Germany that's transitioning from West Germany to a unified country." For this summer's tournament, he favors Curacao's away kit - which is unlikely to be used - with its bright pastel stripes. He admitted that he was somewhat biased, as a former student of his who worked for Adidas designed it. "Obviously I'm a bit biased in saying that the away kit is my favourite, but it's actually my favorite of the tournament," he said. "I just love how restrained he was with the design. He could have done something crazy but it was really thoughtful."
