Tottenham recruits Marcos Senesi as Roberto De Zerbi continues to strengthen the squad
Tottenham Hotspur has signed Marcos Senesi on a free transfer, a step in coach Roberto De Zerbi's plan to restructure the squad to strengthen the defense after a difficult season.
Tottenham Hotspur have strengthened their defense by signing Marcos Senesi on a free transfer, marking another step in coach Roberto De Zerbi's squad restructuring. The centre-back joins north London after his contract with Bournemouth expires at the end of the 2025-26 season. Senesi, who has made 128 appearances for the Cherries since joining from Feyenoord in 2022, has decided not to extend his new contract on the south coast to pursue the chance of a move to Spurs. Expressing his excitement for the new challenge, Senesi said: "It's a very special feeling to be a Tottenham Hotspur player. From the first moments, the club showed how much they want me and they want me to be part of what they are building. It's exciting and I can't wait to be part of it."
This signing is in line with De Zerbi's strategic vision for the club, especially after he successfully overcame the relegation battle, taking 11 points from seven decisive matches. The Italian coach has emphasized the need to invest more in defense and a comprehensive reform of the squad, a direction that seems to be gradually taking shape with the arrival of Senesi. Tottenham have conceded 122 goals in the last two Premier League seasons and have finished in 17th place for two consecutive seasons. The addition of a defensive player with the ability to control the ball like Senesi follows the arrival of left back Andy Robertson, also on a free transfer. De Zerbi said: "Marcos' experience, quality in possession and competitive spirit will strengthen us at the back, while giving us the flexibility to change tactics. He is comfortable playing in a team that plays in possession, reads the game very well and has the personality to thrive in a demanding environment. I also really like his mentality and desire to constantly improve, and I look forward to working with him and seeing great contributions he can bring to the team."
Earlier on Wednesday, Ben Davies signed a new 12-month contract at Tottenham to extend his stay at the club for a 13th season. The Wales captain made just five appearances in an injury-plagued season, but was praised by De Zerbi for his leadership during a tense relegation battle and eventual success in the Premier League. Davies, who made 363 appearances for Tottenham, featured in matches at Aston Villa and Chelsea before helping the team prepare for their decisive final-round win at home to Everton. However, Yves Bissouma will leave the club this summer when his contract expires on June 30.
