Referee Felix Zwayer suffered cramps during America's 2-0 win over Australia at the World Cup, needing support from his players and an energy pack.
Veteran referee Felix Zwayer experienced cramps at the end of the match between the US and Australia teams during the 2026 World Cup in Seattle. Mr Zwayer, 45, needed help from both US player Folarin Balogun and Australia's Aiden O'Neill, who had to stretch his left leg as he fell to the field. In the final minutes of extra time, Zwayer also needed an energy pack - brought on by fourth official Katia Garcia. Despite a bit of difficulty, Mr. Zwayer was able to stand up to manage the rest of the match, with the final result being that the US won 2-0 against Australia, advancing to the knockout round. The match between the US and Australia kicked off at noon local time in Seattle, with temperatures at the end of the match reaching around 26 degrees Celsius and humidity of 45%. Every match at this 48-team World Cup has a break between each half so players can rehydrate. It is not uncommon to see players cramping at the end of a match in hot weather conditions, while referees also have to move a lot to keep up with the progress of the match. Zwayer is one of Europe's leading referees and has officiated the Euro 2024 semi-final between England and the Netherlands as well as the 2025 Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham.
