World Cup 2026: Coach Sebastian Beccacece resigns after Ecuador is eliminated
Sebastian Beccacece resigned as coach of Ecuador after his team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup following a loss to Mexico.

Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece has confirmed he will leave his position after his team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup following a 0-2 defeat to Mexico. Beccacece led the Ecuadorian team to an impressive victory over Germany in the final match of the group stage, but could not continue their journey at this major tournament.

"My contract ended with the World Cup," Beccacece said. "I don't think we have achieved the expectations that we promised: to make this the best World Cup. It's time for me to say goodbye. I would love to move on, but I understand how football works and it hurts, but I think the decision is clear."
Beccacece is the seventh coach at this tournament to resign after the departure of coaches such as Marcelo Bielsa (Uruguay), Steve Clarke (Scotland), Miroslav Koubek (Czech Republic), Ronald Koeman (Netherlands), Sabri Lamouchi (Tunisia) and Hong Myung-bo (South Korea). Ecuador lost 0-1 to Ivory Coast in the opening match of Group E and drew goalless with Curacao in the second match. In the final group match, Ecuador fell behind 0-1 but came back to win 2-1 and advance to the round of 32 as one of the outstanding third-placed teams.
