On Tuesday night, the AZ youth team began its journey to conquer the Youth League in Europe. AZ was the first Dutch team to win this tournament in 2023, when they overcame many fierce opponents such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Sporting Portugal. Three years later, talents from the Northern Netherlands begin a new journey.
AZ participates in the Domestic Champions Path, a pathway for young national champions. Although Feyenoord won the U19 championship last season, they, along with PSV, were assured of participation in the Youth League through the Champions League Path, which means the youth teams of 36 clubs participate with the first team in the Champions League.
AZ's first match took place at Wijdewormer, where they faced Göztepe from Türkiye. The away team suddenly took the lead midway through the first half after a defensive error by AZ, leading to a penalty. Player Yusuf Sirin defeated AZ goalkeeper Nick Homan, exciting the Turkish audience at the stadium.
However, just before half-time, AZ equalized with a beautiful free kick from Chavarello Hellings.
Going into the second half, both teams seemed to have to accept a draw, but about 15 minutes before the match ended, referee Andreu Simarro helped the home team when he awarded AZ a penalty. Hellings did not miss the opportunity, scoring his second goal of the match from the penalty spot.
One minute before the match ended, 17-year-old player Jahmael Ampofo sealed a 3-1 victory for the home team. This result gives AZ an advantage before the second leg in Izmir. The winner of this match will advance to the final qualifying round to face either Rangers FC or Dynamo Kiev.
What happens next
AZ will continue to compete in the UEFA Youth League, where they will face bigger challenges. If they maintain this form, the team can advance further in the tournament, while also creating opportunities for young players like Hellings and Ampofo to develop their talents.
