Context
The 'FanModus' program is designed to encourage fans to turn off their phones during matches, thereby creating a more focused environment for Borussia Dortmund fans. This is part of the club's efforts to enhance the football viewing experience in the Bundesliga.
Why this is important
Borussia Dortmund's 'FanModus' initiative not only encourages fans to focus on the match but also creates a unique interactive experience in German football. This can enhance the bond between the club and the fans, and create a more exciting atmosphere at Signal Iduna Park stadium.

- Borussia Dortmund has launched a unique program to encourage fans to keep their phones turned off during the match, with many attractive rewards.
Borussia Dortmund is launching an interesting initiative to attract the attention of fans during the match against Eintracht Frankfurt at the Signal Iduna Park stadium on October 24. This initiative called "FanModus" (Fan Mode) will reward those who turn off their mobile phones during the match. This program is not simply a way to encourage focus on the game but also creates an interesting social opportunity for fans.
Accordingly, fans will be able to earn points based on the time they do not use their phones during the match. Every minute the phone is kept off will be equivalent to one point. Participants will also have the opportunity to participate in prize draws with many attractive gifts such as signed jerseys of Borussia Dortmund players and vouchers to shop at the club's official store.
To participate, fans need to activate FanModus mode in Dortmund's official app before the match starts and turn off their device. This program allows users to continue earning points as long as they do not exit this mode and the phone screen remains off. However, half-time breaks do not count towards shutdown time, so fans can check their phones during this time and re-enable the mode for the second half.
Maximum time to earn points is 90 minutes. Those with the best results will be included in the lucky draw list. This initiative not only aims to create an enjoyable experience for fans but also reflects the growing concern about the use of mobile phones during sports matches. A survey conducted by Vodafone in 2023 found that 63% of fans regularly use their phones during matches. This has led to Borussia Dortmund deciding to launch this program, to encourage people to focus more on the match experience and stadium environment.
In addition to creating a more focused space for fans, this initiative also marks a major change in the way clubs interact with fans. Instead of encouraging fans to use apps or participate in online games during the match, Dortmund chose the opposite approach by rewarding not interacting with their phones during the match. Not only does this create an interesting approach, but it also helps strengthen the bond between fans and the team.
What happens next
Borussia Dortmund will implement this program in their match against Eintracht Frankfurt on October 24. If successful, 'FanModus' could be applied in subsequent Bundesliga matches, opening up opportunities for more fans to participate and receive rewards.
