According to Sports.
Context
Florian Wirtz, currently playing for Liverpool, is considered one of the brightest young talents in German football. Since joining Liverpool in 2025, Wirtz has not shown the performance as expected, and Chelsea is hoping to take advantage of this to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
Why this is important
The recruitment of Florian Wirtz could mark an important turning point in Chelsea's transfer strategy, especially under the guidance of coach Xabi Alonso. Wirtz, a promising young talent, can bring creativity and technique to the team, something Chelsea needs to compete in the Premier League and European competitions.

Chelsea are aiming to make a notable transfer deal with Liverpool star Florian Wirtz. The first steps have been taken at the request of coach Xabi Alonso. Although Liverpool do not often make deals with Chelsea, there have been a number of deals between the two teams in the past.
The most prominent deal was Daniel Sturridge in 2013, and if considered another way, Rio Ngumoha can also be considered one of the most successful names. Liverpool signed him as a youth player, so not really a transfer, but he is the latest star to appear for Liverpool's first team after joining from Chelsea.
So what about the opposite deal? During the Premier League era, Liverpool have sold three players to Chelsea, the first being Yossi Benayoun in 2010. In fact, all three of these deals took place within a period of 13 months. The biggest transfer was Fernando Torres, who joined Chelsea for a British record fee in January 2011. Raul Meireles then also moved to Chelsea the following summer for a much lower fee.
Since then, no deal has happened between the two teams. But Chelsea is hoping to change this. According to information, Chelsea feels there is an opportunity to sign Florian Wirtz. The German star has not lived up to expectations since joining Liverpool in 2025 and has a favorable association with Chelsea. Wirtz's peak performance took place under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, where he was twice named player of the year and won the Bundesliga championship with the team.
Alonso is keen to work with Wirtz again and has directed Chelsea to begin the process. However, currently we are only monitoring the situation, and there has been no official action yet. Expectedly, Chelsea is waiting for a signal from Liverpool that they are ready to work.
Obviously, letting Wirtz leave would be extremely foolish for Liverpool. While there's no denying that Wirtz hasn't shown his true potential, he's playing on a struggling team that doesn't suit his style. This situation is slowly changing as we have seen Wirtz's influence increase over the past few weeks. Now is not the right time to let him go. Furthermore, Wirtz is likely to reach his full potential if he works under Alonso at Chelsea.
This would be a deal that could weaken Liverpool while at the same time strengthening a major rival - which is certainly not worth the money spent. Therefore, while Chelsea will try step by step to move forward with this deal, Liverpool should not accept any calls from Chelsea.
What happens next
Chelsea will continue to negotiate with Liverpool to find opportunities to sign Wirtz. If this deal is successful, it could open a new era for Chelsea in squad building, while also creating a more positive commercial relationship between the two clubs, something that previous history does not show.
