Why this is important
The dismissal of coach Fernando Diniz marks an important turning point for Corinthians in the context that they are struggling with a long series of defeats and are at risk of relegation from the Brazilian championship (Brasileirão Série A). The loss to Internacional not only caused the team to lose points but also created great pressure before the derby with Palmeiras, a direct competitor. This may affect the psychology of the players and the entire team in the coming rounds.

Corinthians has just decided to fire coach Fernando Diniz after this team suffered their seventh consecutive defeat in the Brazilian championship (Brasileirão). The team's latest loss took place last night when they lost to Internacional with a score of 2-1. Currently, Corinthians are in a relegation battle as they are ranked low in the rankings, the same situation as Internacional and Zakaria Labyad, the injured player.
Diniz, who once led the Brazilian team, has held this position since April this year. With the team not achieving good results and at risk of relegation, Corinthians' board of directors decided they could not continue with this coach. According to sources from Brazil, it is possible that former Argentine player Ramón Díaz, who was coach of Corinthians in the 2024/25 season, will return as captain of the team.
The decision to fire Diniz comes in the context of an important derby match with Palmeiras, the team currently ranked second on the rankings, taking place this weekend. With only nine rounds remaining, points are essential for Corinthians. In the match against Internacional, the team had a few chances to score, but twice the ball hit the woodwork, including a shot by Memphis Depay that also failed. In particular, André's goal in the last minutes was not enough to help the team get a positive result.
Memphis Depay, after returning from the World Cup, has yet to score a goal for Corinthians, even though he extended his contract with the club last August. The 32-year-old is the Netherlands' all-time top scorer, but due to injury, he has not been able to score in the Brazilian championship since March. During the recent international break, the new coach of the Dutch team, Xavi, did not name Memphis, but he still left open the possibility of a return for this player in the future.
What happens next
Corinthians are currently looking for a new coach, with the possibility of Ramón Díaz returning to lead the team. The derby against Palmeiras this weekend will be an opportunity for the team to regain form and accumulate important points. In the context of only nine rounds remaining, each match is decisive for Corinthians' season.
