Former Arsenal director of football, Edu, will take on the role of senior advisor to Northampton Town, a club competing in England's League Two. This decision was made after Edu left his position as Global Director of Football at Nottingham Forest last September.
Recently, Edu joined the board of directors of Bulgarian club Levski Sofia, which is owned by a London-based investment group. The group, Gemcorp Capital, is also an investor in Sports Alpha Capital, which became Northampton Town's largest shareholder following a recent acquisition.
Edu's joining of Northampton Town comes in the context that this club is ranked 23rd in League Two and needs a clearer direction in sporting decisions. Joao Xavier, co-chairman of Northampton, said Edu would assist the club in dealing with sporting issues on an occasional basis, depending on when they needed help.
"We are very proud to have Alex [Pato] and Edu on board. Edu will help us learn more about English football," Xavier said at an open event. He emphasized that the club will not become part of a multi-club ownership model, and that no other clubs are part of their project.
Before arriving at Northampton, Edu had a long and successful spell with Arsenal, where he won two Premier League titles and two FA Cups. He was also the one who brought Mikel Arteta to Emirates Stadium, who helped Arsenal win the Premier League title last season, ending a 22-year title drought.
Edu's departure from Nottingham Forest comes after disagreements with coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked last September, marking the start of a tumultuous season that has seen four coaching changes at the club.
What happens next
Edu will begin his advisory role at Northampton Town, assisting the board in resolving sporting issues where necessary. The club will need to quickly improve their form to avoid the risk of relegation this season. The combination of Edu and Alexandre Pato, a former AC Milan star, can create new opportunities for Northampton in the future.
