Fabrizio Romano hints at Cody Gakpo's possible transfer to Liverpool
Fabrizio Romano reports that Tottenham are interested in Liverpool's Cody Gakpo, but Liverpool currently have no plans to sell the player. The club emphasizes the importance of squad depth and is not open to any negotiations at this time.
Liverpool's summer transfer window has begun with a sense of urgency, and Fabrizio Romano has just added another name to the list of notable situations: Cody Gakpo. Romano says Tottenham are interested in the Dutch international, although Liverpool's current stance remains firm. At the start of July, there was no indication that the club were actively looking to sell the 27-year-old.
"Pay attention to Tottenham with Cody Gakpo. They have interest in this player," Romano said on his YouTube channel. "I can tell you that Liverpool, as of today, the beginning of July, are not open to a departure. They are not saying to Gakpo, 'Okay, you can leave', nor are they saying to Tottenham, 'Okay, let's negotiate'. This is not happening at the moment, so, at the moment, the door is closed at Liverpool.
"We need to see later this summer if Tottenham opens negotiations by submitting a proposal. If they submit a proposal, we need to see what happens there.
"This is an interesting story to follow, but there are no guarantees at this stage."
Squad depth is still an important point
Liverpool does not have many reliable options in attack. Victor Munoz has arrived and can provide versatility, while Alexander Isak is expected to lead the attack. Rio Ngumoha will likely get more playing time, but it would be a big leap to expect him to shoulder regular responsibility over a long season in the Premier League and European competitions. Gakpo also provides support in a central position, which is very important. Selling him without at least one quality replacement, and possibly two, would leave Liverpool short in an area where depth could decide the season.

Tottenham's interest should be taken seriously, but not overly dramatic. Mere interest does not constitute a transfer. A formal proposal, Liverpool's valuation, Gakpo's views and Iraola's assessment will all be important.
Gakpo's decision may come later
For now, the message from Liverpool seems simple, the door is closed. This could change at the end of the transfer window if Tottenham make a serious move, or if Liverpool accelerate their plans for another winger. Until then, Gakpo is still a Liverpool player with something to prove.
In our view - Analysis from Anfield Index
From the perspective of a Liverpool fan, this story needs cool heads. Cody Gakpo was disappointing last season, which is fair. He looked stretched, his output dropped, and at times he seemed stuck between roles instead of thriving in one. However, selling him at this time would be a risk. Liverpool have changed managers, altered parts of the squad and entered another summer where attacking depth is at the heart of the plans.
Gakpo may not be an irreplaceable player, but he is a useful player. That's important. There is also the Iraola element. A new coach might see something different. Gakpo's finishing ability, height, movement from the left and ability to play in a central position could all be valuable in a new system. Fans could ask for more, but writing him off before Iraola has had time to prepare for pre-season would feel rushed. If Tottenham want him, Liverpool should demand a serious fee. No soft deals, no last-minute deals, no weakening the squad against a domestic rival without adequate protection in the market. The ideal outcome might be simple, keep Gakpo, add another winger, then reassess next summer. Liverpool need competition, not another problem of numbers.
