Harry Kane, a player once kicked out of the academy by Arsenal, overcame four loan spells and more than a decade without a title to reach the pinnacle of world football when he won the 2026 Golden Ball at the age of 33. At the awards ceremony held on the evening of October 26 at the London Palladium, Kane said: "I'm not a kid who immediately reached the top. I went through difficult times, was loaned many times and had to fight to become a good version." my best.”
Not only talking about goals or records, the Bayern Munich striker spent most of his time thanking those who have accompanied him on his journey of nearly two decades, from the Tottenham youth team coaches to his family and teammates at Bayern and England. Kane surpassed Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal to become the first English player to win the Ballon d'Or in 25 years, since Michael Owen in 2001.
Kane is also the fifth English player to be honored with this prestigious award, after Stanley Matthews (1956), Bobby Charlton (1966), Kevin Keegan (1978, 1979) and Owen. In the joy of receiving the award, Kane shared: "Being in London makes this moment even more special."
The years of the runner-up
Kane was kicked out of the academy by Arsenal as a child, but found a place at Tottenham. However, the road to the first team is not easy. He was loaned out to Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester, and each trip helped him adapt to professional football.
It wasn't until the 2014-2015 season that Kane really exploded for Tottenham, scoring 21 goals in the Premier League and gradually becoming one of the top strikers in Europe. Over the next 10 years, he won the Premier League top scorer three times with 280 goals for Tottenham in all competitions but still lacked a collective title.
Before leaving Tottenham in 2023, Kane had many defeats in finals, from Euro 2020 to the Champions League. By August 2023, he decided to move to Bayern Munich, where the title became a mandatory requirement. Although in his first season in Germany, Kane scored 36 goals, he was still empty-handed.
Turning point of career
Only in May 2025, when Bayern won the Bundesliga championship, did Kane win his first major title at the club level. In the 2025-2026 season, he scored a total of 73 goals, including 61 goals for Bayern and 12 goals for England. Although they did not win the Champions League trophy, Bayern had the most successful season recently, and Kane is the center of the team's attack.
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard commented that Kane is an all-round player, able to receive the ball in many positions and create accurate passes. Coach Thomas Tuchel also praised him, saying that his transition to Bayern helped Kane reach his full potential.
In his speech when receiving the Golden Ball award, Kane gave special thanks to coach Kompany, who is recovering his health. He also did not forget to mention the coaches who helped him in his career. Kane asserted: “I had the best season of my career, without a doubt.”
Kane said this award belongs not only to himself but also to his teammates and coaching staff. Although the 2026 Golden Ball does not erase his previous failures, it has changed the way he looks at his legacy.
Ultimately, Kane hopes his story will inspire those pursuing their dreams that anything is possible. After ups and downs, deciding to leave the place where he made his name, Kane finally got his hands on the Golden Ball, a worthy reward for his perseverance and relentless effort.
What happens next
After winning the Golden Ball, Harry Kane will continue to play for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, where he is showing impressive performance. Fans and experts are looking forward to seeing if he can maintain this form and help Bayern win more titles in the future.
