During the match between Vietnam and Pakistan at the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup, coach Nolberto Solano of the Pakistan team admitted that his team could not maintain the intensity of the match after the break. This is one of the important factors leading to Pakistan's 2-4 defeat at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta on October 2.
"Pakistan let Vietnam exploit a lot on the right wing," coach Solano said in the press conference after the match. He believes that many of the goals lost by the South Asian team come from this position. Although Pakistan is only ranked 198th on the FIFA rankings, 99 places lower than Vietnam, they suddenly took the lead in the 32nd minute thanks to Mohid Ullah's goal.
However, entering the second half, Pakistan lost the advantage and allowed Vietnam to successfully come back with goals from Nguyen Hai Long and Nguyen Hoang Duc. In particular, Nguyen Dinh Bac, a player who came on the field in the second half, had an excellent performance when he directly scored to increase the score to 3-1 in the 80th minute, along with an assist for Williams Minh Hoang to seal the 4-2 victory in the 90th minute.
During the press conference, coach Solano emphasized Dinh Bac's important role in the match: "His appearance caused many problems for us on the right wing." He also expressed his regret that Dinh Bac could only play as a substitute, possibly to preserve his strength for the upcoming third-place match. However, when Vietnam was behind, Coach Kim was forced to bring Dinh Bac onto the field to create a breakthrough, and this decision was completely effective.
In addition to Dinh Bac, Phan Tuan Tai also left his mark with an assist for Hai Long. Coach Solano assessed that Pakistan's biggest problem was the ability to maintain pressure throughout the match. He said his team coordinated their pressing well and kept their defense tight in the first half, but could not continue that form after the break. "We could no longer maintain strong pressure like in the first half. When the team advanced, the defense tended to drop deep, creating a lot of space for the Vietnamese team to exploit," Solano shared.
Finally, coach Solano did not forget to appreciate the strength of the Vietnamese team, affirming that they are a strong candidate for the championship. Despite finishing the tournament in second place, Vietnam still has the opportunity to compete for third place with Malaysia, while the final will be a confrontation between Thailand and Indonesia on October 5.
What happens next
Vietnam will continue to prepare for the next matches within the framework of FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, with the hope of maintaining form and improving FIFA rankings. Coach Kim may consider using Dinh Bac more in upcoming matches, especially when the team needs creativity and speed in attack. This match will also be an opportunity for Vietnam to strengthen its tactics before moving towards the 2026 World Cup.
