Dirk Kuijt has officially been appointed as Fenerbahçe's interim coach for the upcoming matches. This decision was made after the Turkish Super Lig team parted ways with coach Ismail Kartal on Tuesday. This is the second time in two months that Kartal has had to resign, and this time the decision appears to be final. Kuijt will be on the coaching bench this Saturday in the match against Göztepe.
Fenerbahçe's next match will be on November 4, where they will face Liverpool, Kuijt's former team, in the UEFA Champions League. Kuijt, who was appointed assistant to Kartal in the summer, will lead the team as Kartal's troubles at the club come to an end. Last month, after a Fenerbahçe fan threw a bottle at the coach, Kartal announced his resignation at a press conference.
However, that evening, the club's management announced that there was no talk of Kartal's resignation. But after a dramatic 2-1 loss to Galatasaray, in which there were many incidents at the end of the match, the board of directors agreed to let Kartal leave. Kuijt was a player for Fenerbahçe between 2012 and 2015 and played 130 matches for the club. During this time, he and Fenerbahçe won the Turkish championship in 2014, the national cup in 2013 and the super cup in 2013.
Before becoming interim coach, Kuijt led ADO Den Haag and FC Dordrecht in the Dutch first division, as well as Belgian team Beerschot. Kuijt's return to Fenerbahçe as interim coach promises to bring many interesting things to fans of this team, in the context that the team is in need of a positive change to improve its current performance.
What happens next
Kuijt will have the chance to demonstrate his leadership abilities in this weekend's match against Göztepe, a match that could have a big impact on Fenerbahçe's season. If Kuijt can bring positive results, this could help the team improve its position in the Super Lig rankings and create momentum for the confrontation with Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League.
