Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the best players in football history, is causing Portuguese public opinion to boil when he quit the national team after the match against Denmark in the Nations League, where his team won 4-2. Immediately upon returning from Kopenhagen, coach Jorge Jesus was harshly criticized by some fans at Porto airport. One fan loudly said: "You are a disgrace, with an ego as big as the Eiffel Tower. You do not deserve to be part of Ronaldo, who is considered the greatest athlete of all time!".
The incident escalated to the point where the police had to be present to intervene and escort the Portuguese team onto the bus. Ronaldo left the team camp immediately after coach Jesus held a press conference. Although Ronaldo did not directly comment on the situation, via Instagram he promised to "tell the truth at the appropriate time". Many people believe that not being able to play in the match against Norway was the last straw for a star who was feeling hurt.
Coach Jorge Jesus explained that not allowing Ronaldo to play was due to "tactical reasons". However, this has made him a target of criticism from some fans. To express support for Ronaldo, many billboards have been erected in many places across the country, typically outside Benfica Stadium and the offices of the Portuguese Football Federation, with the message "Thank you Cristiano Ronaldo, forever our captain". The sign also emphasizes that Coach Jesus has a "bloated ego".
During the match against Denmark, fans also continuously expressed their support for Ronaldo with banners. Notably, Danish striker Rasmus Højlund also celebrated his goal in Ronaldo's style. After the match, there was an unhappy situation between Højlund and coach Jesus when the coach refused to comment on Ronaldo during the press conference. He only emphasized that the 4-2 victory was "our best match so far".
According to sources from Portugal and Spain, the Portuguese Football Federation is currently trying to restore its relationship with Ronaldo, to avoid this legend's career ending in bitterness. They want a "respectful and dignified" separation. However, the question is whether Ronaldo is willing to accept this or not. According to Marca newspaper, Coach Jesus and the President of the Portuguese Football Federation tried to convince Ronaldo at the airport, but the player still appeared determined to his decision.
What happens next
In the current tense context, coach Jorge Jesus will need to find a way to mend relationships with the players, especially Ronaldo, if he wants to maintain stability for the team. The next matches in the Nations League will be an opportunity for Portugal to prove their strength, but Ronaldo's absence could affect their season.
