Xander Severina (25 years old) played for ADO Den Haag in the lower division Keuken Kampioen Divisie three years ago. Now, the Rijswijk winger is about to have the opportunity to face the world's top teams such as Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and Arsenal in the Champions League.
Severina's journey was not easy, especially when he was told to leave Sparta when he was just 17 years old, after eight years of studying at the club's training facility. "At that time, I felt like I didn't know if I still wanted to continue with football," Severina shared from Bakoe, the capital of Azerbaijan. To find motivation, he joined amateur club Quick, and two years later, ADO Den Haag offered him a new opportunity in the professional league.
Even though he joined ADO Den Haag's main squad, the matches at Keuken Kampioen Divisie still seem too far away from the Champions League dream. "We weren't really excited about the away trips to VVV-Venlo or Helmond Sport," Severina recalled. Now, however, he is likely to be playing on the same pitch as stars like Lamine Yamal, Martin Ødegaard, Raphinha and Kevin De Bruyne.
Despite not having many opportunities to play at Casa Pia in Portugal, Severina signed for Sabah FC this past summer. Sabah FC, a young club established just nine years ago, has just been crowned champion of Azerbaijan for the first time. With Severina's presence, the team passed eight qualifying matches and entered the Champions League group stage for the first time in history.
"There's really nothing more wonderful than that," Severina happily said about the success of her new team. This is a wonderful story of perseverance and determination, a testament to never giving up on a dream, despite the hardships he had to go through.
What happens next
Severina is expected to be in Sabah FC's squad when they enter the Champions League group stage. This is not only an important milestone in his career but also an opportunity for Sabah FC to assert itself as a team capable of competing with big clubs in the world.
