In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey revealed that Chelsea is facing fierce competition to recruit defender Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan. The London team will have to compete with giants like Barcelona, Liverpool and Manchester City in the race to sign the Italian midfielder next summer.
Bastoni showed impressive form in Serie A last season when he featured in Inter Milan's defense. At 27 years old, he scored two goals and had six assists in 40 matches in all competitions for the Milan team last season. The talented Italian is currently among the best centre-backs in Serie A, and Chelsea would benefit from securing his services next year.
Bastoni's current contract with San Siro runs until the summer of 2028, which could open the door for Chelsea to sign him for a reasonable fee later this season. Bastoni is a strong defender, capable of reading situations well and recovering the ball for the home team. He often makes fierce tackles and is excellent at deploying the ball from his own half.
With a height of 1.90m, the Italian defender can take advantage of his muscular body to win aerial duels. Bastoni has proven his worth as a reliable player in Serie A. However, there are still many questions about whether he can replicate that good form in the Premier League if Chelsea are successful in signing him next year.
If they can sign Bastoni, Chelsea will have an additional boost to their defense under the guidance of coach Xabi Alonso. He has enough ability to compete for an official position at Stamford Bridge. At the age of 27, Bastoni's peak years are still ahead, making him a logical choice for the West London side in the January transfer window or next summer. Bastoni will also help Chelsea compete in every competition in the coming years. Investing in Bastoni will be worth it, so Alonso should focus on signing him soon.
What happens next
Chelsea will need to act quickly to overcome rivals in the race for Bastoni's signature. His current contract with Inter Milan runs until the summer of 2028, but it is possible that Chelsea will look to negotiate a reasonable deal later this season. This will not only help Chelsea strengthen their forces but also improve their season prospects in the context of fierce competition in the Premier League.
