Context
Rayan Cherki, a young French footballer, has had an impressive start to the 2026-27 season with Manchester City, scoring 4 goals and providing 2 assists in 8 matches. His transformation from the number ten role to a deep midfielder not only helped him stand out in Manchester City's squad but also attracted the attention of France coach Zinedine Zidane.
Why this is important
Rayan Cherki has shown impressive ability in a deep midfield role at Manchester City, which has not only enhanced the team's performance but also opened up many tactical options for coach Enzo Maresca. His excellence in the match against Crystal Palace showed Cherki's great potential, which can affect the season of Manchester City and the French team under the guidance of Zinedine Zidane.
Main point
- Rayan Cherki and the emergence of a new option in.
- Rayan Cherki has shined in a deep midfield role for Manchester City, leading many to question his ability to perform under the guidance of Enzo Maresca.
- Has a new midfield option at Manchester City appeared for Enzo Maresca?.
Rayan Cherki has had an impressive start to the 2026-27 season with Manchester City. Played as a number ten, the Frenchman has scored 4 goals and provided 2 assists in 8 appearances in all competitions. Cherki's most outstanding performance was probably in Manchester City's 4-1 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, where he contributed two goals.
Cherki's impressive start has helped him gain a new role in the French team under the guidance of Zinedine Zidane. Zidane's manipulation of Cherki raises questions about whether Enzo Maresca could use the player in a deeper midfield role at Manchester City. Zidane heaped praise on Cherki and what he brings to the midfield. The French team won 1-0 against Türkiye in their opening UEFA Nations League match, with Kylian Mbappe scoring the decisive goal in the 54th minute.
From Manchester City's perspective, Cherki took on a deep midfielder role in Zidane's squad, helping regulate the pace of the match with a completion rate of 68/74 passes. A highlight of Cherki's performance was his ability to pass the ball wide, opening up many attacking opportunities for the French team. He also showed strength on the ball, with three breakthroughs, totaling 77.3 metres. Additionally, Cherki also won five out of nine ground duels, showing he is capable of playing in a deep midfield position.
Before France's next match against Belgium, Zidane shared that he would love to play with Rayan Cherki. He also praised Cherki's ability to play without the ball, saying: "Yes, I really want to play with him, he is a real player. But what is more important is his ability that everyone knows.
Despite not having much playing time in a deep midfield role for France, Cherki's performance against Türkiye showed a lot of promise. The praise from Zidane is also noteworthy, especially as it comes from a coach who was one of the best players of his generation.
Considering the possibility that Rayan Cherki could play in the same position at Manchester City as Zidane used, there is reason to believe that he could dictate the tempo of the game from a deep midfield position. These were seen last season under Pep Guardiola, when Cherki sometimes resembled Bernardo Silva when he played in a deep midfield position.
Of course, with the presence of Enzo Fernandez, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Elliot Anderson in the midfield, Manchester City has quality options on hand. However, Cherki playing in a deep midfield role brings a complete difference compared to other midfielders. This also gives him more chances to touch the ball, which will only benefit Manchester City. That's something for Enzo Maresca to think about.
What happens next
With current form, Cherki can continue to be trusted in the role of deep midfielder, helping Manchester City maintain an advantage in upcoming matches. The combination of Cherki and stars like Bernardo Silva and Kylian Mbappe could create significant attacking opportunities, affecting the seasons of both Manchester City and the French team. Coach Enzo Maresca will need to consider carefully how to use Cherki to optimize the team's strength.
