Atlético Madrid won 2-1 against Deportivo Alavés at the Mendizorrotza Stadium, where Cristian Romero scored in the 87th minute, helping the team end a four-match winless streak. This late goal decided a match in which Atlético took the lead, but then allowed their opponents to equalize from a penalty before the break.
Alejandro Grimaldo opened the scoring for Atlético with his third goal of the season, finishing off after a brilliant combination with Jonathan David. This goal is a testament to Grimaldo's strong start at Atlético, as he has brought a new attacking option to the team.
Before the end of the first half, Robin Le Normand gave Atlético a penalty when he fouled Toni Martínez in the penalty area, and Lucas Boyé succeeded, equalizing 1-1 for Alavés. In the second half, Alavés was reduced in numbers when a player had to leave the field, but Atlético still had to find a way to penetrate the home team's solid defense before Romero scored the decisive goal.
The Argentine defender moved into position as a striker and was at the far post to collect Álex Baena's pass. This was Romero's first goal for Atlético and was the decisive moment in a match where it looked like neither team would win. The transfer from Tottenham gave Diego Simeone a new centre-back, and at Mendizorrotza, he not only ensured defensive solidity but also scored the decisive goal.
This victory ended Atlético's four-match winless streak at Alavés Stadium, making the three points that much more valuable. Atlético's reaction after Boyé's equalizer was the deciding factor in the result. They suffered a penalty from Le Normand's error but maintained the pressure after the break and took advantage of their man advantage in the final minutes of the match.
This is an important victory for the team after the international break, opening a new beginning for Simeone and his students. In this match, Ademola Lookman had an unsatisfactory debut after three weeks off, making only 16 of 18 successful passes. However, Alavés defender Nahuel Tenaglia limited his influence in the first half. Baena came on as a substitute and had the decisive pass to help Atlético score, providing an important contribution to the team in the final minutes.
These details show that Atlético's changes and balance in midfield helped maintain the pressure until the decisive goal was found. Baena's pass found Romero, and Atlético left Mendizorrotza with a victory they had not had in their previous four visits.
What happens next
With this victory, Atlético Madrid will aim to maintain momentum in the upcoming matches, especially when they prepare to face direct competitors during the season. Romero, with his current form, can become a key factor in the upcoming matches, helping the team improve its position on the rankings.
