Striker Erling Haaland emphasized the spirit of solidarity and bravery of Manchester City after this team won 3-0 against Liverpool in the match in round 6 of the Premier League. Speaking after the match at Anfield on October 11, Haaland said: "This is a great moment, it will stay in our minds for a long time. The match was really difficult, but the whole team showed great character. I am proud of everyone on the team."
The match was balanced until the 62nd minute, when Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch received a second yellow card after a foul on Jeremy Doku. Just two minutes and 37 seconds after Man City had the advantage, Haaland scored the opening goal. After that, Doku and Rayan Cherki scored two more goals, sealing a 3-0 victory for the away team.
This is Man City's first match since being found to have seriously violated the Premier League's financial regulations in the period 2009-2018. Amid the pressure off the field, Haaland shared that the ability to maintain spirit and unity is the key factor to help the team win. He said: "At times like this, it is important to maintain spirit and unity. We can only focus on playing football and fighting together. This is also a psychological battle. I am proud that the whole team stood together."
Haaland also said returning to the club after more than two weeks of focusing on the national team is a challenge, especially when having to play as a guest against Liverpool. Even though he once missed a clear opportunity, he did not let that affect his mentality. "I missed a big chance, but the thing to do is to keep focused and wait. When the next chance came, I took advantage. Scoring three goals at Anfield is not something that happens often," Haaland added.
Besides, Haaland also praised Elliot Anderson, the player who was voted the best player in the match thanks to his ability to control the midfield and fighting spirit. He also shared a private moment when he tried to find his father, former midfielder Alf-Inge Haaland, in the stands but couldn't find him. "It looks like everyone had a great time. I think dad was happy too, so I'll text him," Haaland said.
Coach Enzo Maresca also appreciated the leadership roles of Haaland and captain Ruben Dias in the team. While Haaland increased the total number of goals in the Premier League this season to 6, Dias continued to be a strong support in defense, contributing to helping Man City keep a clean sheet at Anfield. Maresca affirmed: "They have played a very important role from the first day. The players only focus on football, not caring about outside noise or what will happen in the future. They only think about what they love, which is going on the field to compete."
The victory at Anfield also helped Maresca enter Premier League history, becoming the fourth coach to win in his first six matches leading a club. If Man City continues to defeat Ipswich Town on October 17, he will become the first coach to win all seven of his first matches in charge in the Premier League. However, Maresca does not want to think too far ahead, he only focuses on the next match. "Beating Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield felt like a perfect day for all of us. I don't think where the team will be in two, three or four games. All I care about is the next match," Maresca concluded.
What happens next
With this victory, Manchester City can continue to build momentum in the next matches of the Premier League. They will need to maintain form and focus to compete for the top position, especially when opponents are gradually becoming stronger this season.
