Context
Michael Carrick was once considered a successful solution for Manchester United when he replaced Ruben Amorim, helping the team win tickets to the Champions League. However, after poor results this season, Carrick is facing great pressure from both fans and former players like Jamie Carragher.
Why this is important
The 0-3 defeat to Bournemouth has raised concerns about coach Michael Carrick's future at Manchester United. Jamie Carragher emphasized that the current situation is not only a tactical problem but also reflects a lack of stability within the team, which could seriously affect the season of one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Carragher made strong statements calling for Manchester United to fire coach Michael Carrick immediately after the 0-3 defeat to Bournemouth. Carragher pointed out that the team's series of poor results is not just a temporary tactical or performance problem but also reflects a team that is clearly losing direction.
According to Carragher, the current situation has become too bad and Carrick probably no longer wants to continue leading the team with the current players. "Carrick wants a change. He doesn't want to continue sitting in the technical area with those players. Free him tonight," Carragher emphasized.
The former Liverpool player also criticized midfielder Bruno Fernandes after the loss, saying that his act of publicly questioning the coach's tactics was disgraceful. He believes that Fernandes lacks respect for Carrick, who helped him regain his best form last season. Carragher questioned Fernandes constantly complaining and blaming others, while not meeting expectations himself.
Carragher emphasized that Manchester United cannot build a stable team if its pillars often openly challenge the coach's authority. Last season, Carrick was considered a successful solution for Man Utd when he replaced Ruben Amorim midway through the 2025-2026 season, helping the team improve its performance and win tickets to the Champions League. However, in the 2026-2027 season, those gains quickly disappeared.
Currently, Manchester United is declining in both results and playing style, and the conflict between coach Carrick and some key players is becoming more and more public. After the loss to Bournemouth, although Carrick remained stubborn in the press conference, the image of him standing and applauding towards the Old Trafford stands made many people speculate that this could be his farewell. In particular, while the players were booed by fans for their disappointing performance, Carrick's name was still chanted after the third goal, showing support from a part of the fans.
Gary Neville, Carrick's former teammate at Manchester United, also predicted that the club may soon make a decision to change coach. "It will be extremely difficult for Carrick to continue leading Man Utd," Neville said. "Maybe they'll fire him."
What happens next
If Manchester United decides to fire Carrick, they will need to quickly find a new coach to stabilize the squad and improve performance. This may affect the psychology of the players, especially Bruno Fernandes, who has publicly criticized Carrick's tactics, raising questions about team unity.
