The match between Esteghlal and Al-Shamal promises to bring exciting competition on the coaching bench. Sohrab Bakhtiyari-Zadeh, with his deep knowledge of Iranian football and Esteghlal's identity, will face David Prats, a Spanish coach who has spent many years working alongside Xavi Hernandez.
David Prats, born in Barcelona, had a promising playing career before having to stop early due to injury. He developed his career in Barcelona's youth teams, then played for clubs such as Mataro, Girona, Badalona and several other teams in Spain. After leaving the field, Prats turned his career to football coaching and analysis.
In 2018, Prats moved to Qatar, where he took on the responsibility of leading Al-Sadd's U23 team. He later joined Xavi's coaching staff and was active as an analyst at Al-Sadd as well as Barcelona. One of Prats' main tasks on the coaching staff is to analyze opponents and prepare tactics for the team.
In the middle of the 2024 season, Prats was appointed head coach of Al-Shamal and helped this team win the runner-up position of the Qatar National Championship. This achievement helped him win the "Best Coach of the 2026-2025 season" award in Qatar, surpassing candidates such as Roberto Mancini and Vicente Moreno. Al-Shamal also participated in Asia's top tournament for the first time.
The imprint of Prats' years working as an analyst was clearly evident in Al-Shamal's performance in the Asian arena. His team led Al-Ittihad until the last minute, maintained its defensive structure against Tractor and defeated Al-Hilal 3-1 thanks to quick attacks. After the draw with Tractor, Prats emphasized the importance of team discipline and the ability to compete with top teams on the continent.
On the contrary, Sohrab is trying to disrupt Prats' organization with a three-man defense, moment-to-moment pressing and the pace of Asani and Ghali-Zadeh. The lack of Ashourmatov forced him to adjust his central defense, and this decision could change the outcome of the match.
The match between Esteghlal and Al-Shamal is not only a battle between two teams but also a competition between two coaches with different styles and ideologies. Let's wait and see who will win in this dramatic battle!
What happens next
After the match, both coaches will have the opportunity to reassess their team's tactics and performance. If Al-Shamal wins, David Prats could cement his position among Qatari fans, while Esteghlal will need to reconsider his strategy. This match could also affect the regional title races, especially when Al-Shamal is in good form.
