Florian Wirtz, the German player who just joined Liverpool for a record fee in the summer of 2025, has not yet shown his value at this team. According to Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool player, Wirtz has gone through nearly sixty matches but still has not met the expectations of the club and fans.
Wirtz joined Liverpool for up to 125 million euros, after having great success with Bayer Leverkusen. However, what he has shown so far is not enough to convince experts. Carragher said: "They spent a lot of money on Wirtz. I have had my criticisms of him and don't want to criticize too much, but the reality is he needs to perform better.
In the context of the team missing Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak due to injury, Wirtz was unable to help the home team against two young players Victor Muñoz and Lewis Koumas, who, according to Carragher, played better than Wirtz and Barcola, even though both players also had transfer fees of over 100 million euros.
Carragher made these comments after the 3-0 loss to Manchester City, where Wirtz did not show much in the match. He emphasized that Wirtz's decline compared to young players like Koumas and Muñoz is worrying.
In addition, Carragher also mentioned Ryan Gravenberch, who had to leave the field after two yellow cards. He commented: "Gravenberch had a good match, and I don't think Wirtz can currently stand above him. Wirtz is bringing too little to Liverpool.
Up to now, Wirtz has made 57 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 7 goals and providing 11 assists. Currently, Liverpool is ranked ninth in the Premier League and next week will have a confrontation with LASK Linz in the Champions League.
What happens next
Liverpool will need to reconsider Wirtz's role in the squad, especially when they face competitors in the Premier League. If he does not improve his performance, it is possible that he will be replaced or have his role minimized in future matches.
