Why this is important
Marc Cucurella proved his ability to neutralize Lamine Yamal, one of Barcelona's best young players, in Chelsea's 3-0 win. - Cucurella - the solution to suppress Yamal in El Clasico?.
Spain - Marc Cucurella made a strong impression when he helped Chelsea win 3-0 against Barcelona in the Champions League last season by neutralizing Lamine Yamal, the young player who is becoming the biggest threat to Real Madrid in El Clasico matches. With three goals and two assists in recent matches, Yamal has made an important contribution to helping Barcelona defeat Real in 6 of the last 7 confrontations. However, Real has reason to be confident when Cucurella, a rookie from Chelsea for 66 million USD, can become the key in this match.
In the match a year ago, Cucurella demonstrated his ability to lock down Yamal, making it almost impossible for Barcelona's attack to operate effectively. Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez commented: "Cucurella has complete control over Lamine Yamal". Roberto Martinez, a member of UEFA's technical observation team, also pointed out that Cucurella actively pushed Yamal close to the touchline, forcing the player to use his right foot instead of his natural left foot, which contributed to Chelsea's victory.
Cucurella not only relies on his personal abilities but also receives support from his teammates. When Yamal tries to move into the middle, there is always another Chelsea player ready to block, which allows Cucurella to focus on limiting Yamal without having to worry about being easily passed. Rui Faria, another technical observer, appreciated the way Cucurella closed in on his opponent. This approach helps Cucurella put pressure on Yamal right from the first pass, leaving the young player without enough time to perform familiar movements.
Although Cucurella had impressive performances against Barcelona, that does not mean that his task in the upcoming El Clasico match will be easy. The combination with Yan Diomande on the left flank will be very important. Diomande not only needs to support Cucurella but also closely follow the Barcelona right-back's moves to avoid a one-on-two situation. This requires Diomande to constantly observe and retreat at the right time to close the gap, while not losing the home team's ability to counterattack.
Although Cucurella has not been in his best form this season, he is still an important part of coach Jose Mourinho's plans. After 12 matches, Cucurella has not scored or assisted, but his participation in the team's defense system is undeniable. Coach Mourinho will probably apply the same strategy as before when he used Pepe or Sami Khedira to follow Lionel Messi in El Clasico matches. To win, limiting Yamal's influence will be one of the most important keys for Real Madrid in this match.
What happens next
Today's El Clasico match will be an important test for Cucurella and Real Madrid. If Cucurella continues his good form and stops Yamal, this will not only affect the match result but also shape the season of both teams in the context of La Liga's tension.
