In the match in round 8 of the Premier League, Manchester United suffered a heavy defeat with a score of 0-3 against Bournemouth, which became even more serious when captain Bruno Fernandes was not named in the starting lineup. Coach Michael Carrick decided to leave Fernandes on the bench just a few days after the player publicly expressed dissatisfaction with his tactics after a 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League. This decision caused much controversy and raised questions about Carrick's leadership.
Carrick gave the captain's armband to Harry Maguire and used Mason Mount and Youri Tielemans to organize play. However, the absence of Fernandes has made Man Utd's attack powerless in creating opportunities. The Old Trafford team has only won one of the last 11 matches in the Premier League without Fernandes in the main team, drawing three and losing seven matches.
The defeat against Bournemouth once again raises questions about Carrick's personnel decisions in the context that Man Utd needs a victory to end a series of disappointments. Bournemouth, the team that defeated Man Utd 3-0 at Old Trafford in December 2023 and 2024, continued to sow sadness for Carrick's army.
The match took place with initiative from Bournemouth, the away team opened the score in the 38th minute thanks to Justin Kluivert's accurate free kick, creating conditions for Rayan to score with an accurate volley. In the last minute of the first half, the home team paid the price for their personal mistake again when Leny Yoro slipped, allowing Adrien Truffert to steal the ball and pass it to Marcus Tavernier, who easily scored to increase the score to 2-0.
Entering the second half, Man Utd still could not improve the situation. Bournemouth had many opportunities to increase the gap but did not take advantage of it. In the end, Evanilson tied the score 3-0 after a quick counterattack, when he escaped from a long pass and scored into an empty net as goalkeeper Senne Lammens rushed out of the penalty area.
Man Utd's performance showed a lack of tactics and identity, making Carrick's future uncertain. After the match, Man Utd fans expressed anger not only with the coach but also with the leadership when the team continued to make mistakes. They booed after defeat and called for changes in team structure.
Bournemouth, after this win, had their fourth consecutive victory in all competitions, thereby rising to 13th place with 10 points. Meanwhile, Man Utd is in a crisis with only 7 points after 8 rounds and is ranked 16th on the rankings, looking at the bottom group instead of aiming for the race in the top half.
What happens next
After this loss, Manchester United will need to review their tactics and personnel to find a victory in the next matches. Coach Carrick may have to bring Fernandes back to the starting lineup to improve the team's attacking ability. The season is still long, but if there are no positive changes, Man Utd may continue to have difficulty in the Premier League race.
